Luthier Richard Hoover began building guitars and mandolins in 1972, and by 1976 narrowed his focus to the modern steel string guitar. In keeping with his commitment to detail, a team of craftspeople at the Santa Cruz Guitar Company use a "bench style" of building in which each performs his specialty and reviews the work of those who completed the earlier stages. More than half of the company’s handmade guitars are for custom orders built to reflect the personality and playing needs of the buyer. And every Santa Cruz guitar is tuned by hand to ensure consistency of sound within each standard model line.
